Both periodontal and peri-implant disease develop as a result of the accumulation of bacterial plaque and so the treatment for both diseases adopts the same principles. Even though treatment principles are similar, outcomes differ as well as long term prognosis. Proper understanding of biological principles, development and progression of these diseases as well as understanding and creating simplified protocols can have a big impact when treating complex cases. Application of minimally invasive concept, gentle tissue management during non-surgical and surgical techniques allow the clinician to obtain predictable, successful and long term results.

Dental Implants and sinus augmentation surgeries are widespread and are performed on a daily basis around the world. The fact that these surgeries are being done on human beings that can be medically compromised is not emphasized enough. The aim of the present lecture is to survey the use of dental implants in medically compromised or ill patients that can have numerous conditions such as connective tissue diseases such as Lichen planus or lupus which can result if not caught in time in oral cancer. furthermore, new drugs are being used these days that can pose a risk for surgical procedures such as NOACS (Pradaxa, elixir, etc..), Plavixs, Efficient, Aspirin, Clexan, etc. I will explain the general precautions when dealing with medically compromised patients in the dental clinic and review the DOs and the DONTs when oral surgeries are needed for these patients.
